Visit to the Espioca Tower of Picassent with the 2nd Tourist, Cultural and Historical Route through the Andalusi Heritage of l’Horta Sud

The Espioca Tower is the Valencian Andalusi tower with the widest visual field along the entire coastal strip.

10 December 2025 – This Saturday 13 December, at 11:00 a.m., we continue exploring the Andalusi heritage of l’Horta Sud with a guided visit to the Espioca Tower of Picassent, led by José Manuel Almerich, geographer, writer from Torrent and a great connoisseur of our territory.

Thanks to the collaboration of the Picassent City Council, we will have the opportunity to visit the interior of the tower and climb up to the upper part, recently restored. From there we will enjoy spectacular views: from the castle of Almenara to Cullera, passing through the Corbera mountain range and the Montgó. The Espioca Tower is, without a doubt, the Valencian Andalusi tower with the widest visual field along the entire coastal strip.

This visit is a unique opportunity to learn about the history, architecture and heritage that form part of our regional identity. It allows us to better understand how the Andalusi period shaped our land, from alquerías and irrigation channels to toponymy and the agricultural landscape we still preserve.

This visit is part of the second edition of El llegat andalusí a l’Horta Sud, organised jointly with the Regional Museum of l’Horta Sud, Llegat Andalusí a l’Horta Sud, València Turisme and the Provincial Council of Valencia, an initiative that invites us to discover and value the Andalusi heritage of our region.”

The Andalusi legacy of l’Horta Sud

The arrival of Jaume I and the conquest of Valencia transformed the former taifa kingdoms into the Christian Kingdom of Valencia, maintaining Andalusi customs until the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609. This meant that Andalusi culture remained in our lands 400 years longer than in the rest of Spain.

Many towns in l’Horta Sud still preserve defensive towers which, during the Middle Ages, protected the city and the agricultural lands of Valencia. But the Andalusi legacy goes much further: the alquerías, the irrigation channels, the toponymy and the agricultural landscape constitute a unique heritage that we can appreciate, transmit and highlight as a cultural and tourist attraction of the region.
