Join the ‘Salvem las Fotos’ volunteer initiative to help preserve the collective memory and heritage of l’Horta Sur

April 2, 2026 – Recovering the photographic heritage affected by the DANA is proving to be an immense challenge. Through the project Salvem les Fotos, nearly one million photographs have been collected from homes across our region, and there is still much work to be done to restore the memory of our municipalities and preserve the everyday history of affected families. This project safeguards an emotional and collective heritage that documents life, celebrations, spaces, and social relationships within the community.
Initially promoted by the Universitat de València and with the collaboration of various organisations, public institutions and companies in the territory, Salvem les Fotos also includes the recovery of magnetic tapes and film footage, thereby expanding the preservation of the region’s audiovisual heritage.
A total of 1,080 families have entrusted their memories to the Salvem les Fotos project. The Museu Comarcal de l’Horta Sud, in Torrent, serves as the centre where the largest volume of material is concentrated, with 493 families (45% of the total). Other participating laboratories include the Natural History Museum of the Universitat de València, with 123 families; the Municipal Museum Casa Alamazón, in Utiel, with 43 families; ESART – Contemporary Art Centre, Algemesí, with 240 families; and the Castle of Alaquàs, in Alaquàs (formerly Espai Jove d’Alfafar), with 181 families.
So far, and thanks to recent additions and volunteer work, at the Museu Comarcal de l’Horta Sud more than 128,700 images have been extracted and the material returned to 117 families, but there is still a great deal of work ahead to recover the region’s collective memory.
Volunteering
For this reason, we are making a call to the public to join the project as volunteers. We especially encourage associations to organise and take part: every hour and effort contributed is a grain of sand towards restoring the history and memories of our community.
Schedule and contact
Volunteering hours are Monday to Friday, from 10:00 to 14:00, at all laboratories, while on Tuesdays and Thursdays shifts can be done from 10:00 to 18:00 at the Museu Comarcal de l’Horta Sud.
